漢語科技詞匯的英譯

    漢英科技翻譯中首先遇到的就是漢語科技詞匯的英譯問題。實際上，漢語科技詞匯，特別是近代科學，大多數(shù)是從原來的外語科技詞匯譯過來的，經(jīng)過不斷使用，漸趨固定，成為對應詞。例如：
電子electron 質子proton 光子photon
激光器laser 晶體管transistor 電傳telex
這類詞必須死記背熟，翻譯時才能得心應手。
問題是中國科技工作者自己的創(chuàng)新，有了新詞，該如何譯成英語，使外國人也能懂得。
近代漢語科技詞，像中國的專利發(fā)明和科技論文內(nèi)使用的科技詞匯，大多數(shù)也可以借用英語詞。例如：
新離子交換樹脂New ion-exchange resin 
改進型高頻頻譜分析儀Improved high-frequency spectrum analyzer 
漢字編碼系統(tǒng)Chinese character coding system
自動電壓補償器Automatic voltage compensator 
一部分漢語特有的科技詞匯古今都有，特別是縮略詞，在英語中還沒有現(xiàn)成的可借用或英語中尚不通用的詞匯，恐須先直譯成英語后再加注，以幫助讀者理解。所加的注可直接用破折號加在英譯名之后，也可用括號，或者加腳注。經(jīng)過反復使用，這類英譯名為外國人所熟悉了，就可以取消加注。例如：
指南車South-pointing vehicle-an ancient Chinese vehicle with a wooden figure always pointing to the south
地動儀 Earthquake measuring instrument-a seismograph invented by the Chinese scientist Zhang Heng in the Han Dynasty 
三廢 The three wastes-gaseous waste, liquid waste and residual solid waste 
五行 The five elements-metal, wood, water, fire and earth used in traditional Chinese to explain various physiological and pathological phenomena 
如果實在難以直譯，可以用音譯再加注。過去有許多從漢語音譯成的英語詞已被收入國外的詞典，成了對應詞。久而久之，如被外國詞典所收入，就可成為對應詞。過去有不少例子， 例如：
荔子litchi 龍眼longan 人參ginseng
舢板sampan 楠木nanmu 氣功qigong
這些詞現(xiàn)在一般都不必加注了。
如外國人的詞匯中也有類似的，那就不一定用音譯。例如：
針灸 acupuncture and moxibustion 
青瓷 celadon
丹黃 lead monoxide(litharge)
三仙丹 mercuric oxide(corundum)
雄黃 arsenic disulphide(realgar)
漢語科技詞的組成部分中如果有一部分有對應的英語詞，可采用半音譯的混合方式。例如：
云貴高原 Yun-Gui plateau 克山病Keshan disease
陳氏定理 Chen's theorem 定窯瓷器Ding ware殷墟Yin Dynasty ruins
唐三彩 Tang Dynasty tricoloured pottery 
但包含中國古典論名稱的詞匯，半音譯外，一般還需要加注。部分中成藥也可這樣處理。例如：
陰陽學說Yin-Yang (Yin Yang, in Chinese medicine, are the two forces which both oppose and complement each other, with the former indicating feminine and negative and the latter masculine and positive.)
經(jīng)絡理論Jing and Luo theory(Jing and Luo, in Chinese medicine, are main collateral channels regarded as a network of passages, through which vital energy circulates and along which the acupuncture points are distributed.)
